Brandon Garrett was traveling north on Forest Service Road 39 with his four dogs on Sunday night (2) when he “failed to negotiate a curve” and tumbled down an embankment, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.

While Garrett managed to crawl about 100 meters from the wrecked vehicle where he spent the night, one of his dogs ran six kilometers to a nearby campsite to seek help. Garrett’s relatives began searching for him and eventually located his vehicle the next morning.

Garrett and his other three dogs were found alive, but the family couldn’t reach them due to the terrain. Sheriff Travis Ash located the vehicle and a dog in the “steep and brushy ravine.” While searching for an access point, he heard Garrett calling for help.

Rescuers used chainsaws to clear a path. Once the team was able to reach Garrett, they carried him on a rescue stretcher and used a rope system to pull him up the ravine. Garrett was airlifted to a hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
